Background of the Study :
Ensuring secure access to university hostels is a critical aspect of campus safety, yet many institutions still rely on traditional lock-and-key systems that are vulnerable to breaches and mismanagement. In Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State, the need for a more reliable and automated access control system is increasingly apparent. IoT-based smart door lock systems offer an innovative solution by integrating digital access control, real-time monitoring, and automated logging of entry and exit events. This study investigates the implementation of a smart door lock system in university hostels, utilizing technologies such as RFID, biometric authentication, and remote monitoring via mobile applications (Ibrahim, 2023). The system is designed to ensure that only authorized individuals can access the hostels, thereby enhancing security and reducing instances of unauthorized entry. Data from the smart locks will be transmitted to a centralized database, allowing for detailed tracking of access events and providing administrators with real-time alerts in case of anomalies. Prior research has shown that IoT-based access control systems can significantly reduce security breaches and improve the overall safety of residential facilities (Olu, 2024). By tailoring this technology to the specific needs of university hostels in Lafia LGA, the study aims to develop a cost-effective and scalable solution that enhances security while also providing convenience to residents. The system will also address potential challenges such as network reliability, data privacy, and user training. Ultimately, the integration of IoT-based smart door locks is expected to transform traditional hostel security, offering a robust solution that supports both safety and administrative efficiency (Adeniyi, 2025).

Statement of the Problem :
Traditional door lock systems in university hostels are increasingly inadequate in addressing modern security challenges. In Lafia LGA, unauthorized access and theft remain persistent issues due to the limitations of conventional mechanical locks and keys. Manual systems are not only prone to loss and damage but also lack the capability to provide real-time monitoring and data logging, making it difficult to track access patterns and respond swiftly to security breaches. This inadequacy compromises the safety of residents and places a heavy burden on hostel management to manually supervise access. Additionally, conventional systems do not integrate with digital platforms, resulting in delayed or inaccurate record-keeping. The absence of an automated, IoT-based solution hinders the ability to enforce strict access controls and monitor unauthorized entries effectively. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop a smart door lock system that leverages IoT technologies to automate access control, ensure real-time monitoring, and improve data accuracy. This study seeks to address these issues by designing and implementing a system that combines RFID and biometric authentication with remote monitoring capabilities. The proposed solution aims to provide a secure, reliable, and user-friendly access control system tailored to the unique challenges of university hostels in Lafia LGA. Addressing these problems is crucial for enhancing hostel security, reducing administrative burdens, and safeguarding the wellbeing of residents (Ibrahim, 2023; Olu, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To design an IoT-based smart door lock system for university hostels.

  • To integrate RFID and biometric authentication for secure access.

  • To evaluate the system’s performance in terms of security, reliability, and user satisfaction.

Research Questions:

  • How effective is the smart door lock system in preventing unauthorized access?

  • What are the operational benefits of integrating RFID and biometric technologies?

  • How does the system improve administrative efficiency in managing hostel access?

Significance of the Study :
This study is significant as it develops an IoT-based smart door lock system that enhances security in university hostels by automating access control and providing real-time monitoring. The system improves safety and operational efficiency, offering a scalable solution for higher education institutions in resource-constrained settings. The findings will contribute to better security practices and serve as a model for similar applications in other residential facilities (Adeniyi, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to the design, implementation, and evaluation of the IoT-based smart door lock system in university hostels in Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State, and does not extend to other types of residential security systems.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Smart Door Lock System: An automated access control system that uses digital technologies for secure entry.

  2. RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification): A wireless technology used for automatic identification and tracking.

  3. Biometric Authentication: Verification of an individual’s identity using unique physiological characteristics.
